How Can You Bear One Another’s Burdens?

Christian Healthcare Ministries & Galatians 6:2

Most Christians are familiar with the concept of bearing each other’s burdens. What does that mean? Are we expected to go around dealing with everyone else’s problems when we have problems of our own? How can we be a blessing to someone else this holiday season and beyond?

A Christmas Blessing – Gift Giving from a Biblical Perspective

The gift of giving

The decorations are up, the shopping is complete, and the gifts are all ready to be unwrapped. Maya Angelou said:

“We clap hands and welcome the peace of Christmas.
We beckon this good season to wait a while with us”.

We love this season not only because we receive gifts, but also because we can give them. Both are blessings from God, and they consist of the goodwill and happiness that he provides for and through us. We can be a Christmas blessing to a family less fortunate or we can choose to be a blessing through acts of kindness throughout the season.

Counting Your Blessings

The desire to “want”

With the proliferation of addictive phone apps, streamlined fast food deliveries, instantaneous communication, and on-demand media services, every desire is taken care of in the blink of an eye. So quickly, in fact, that it’s easy to get lost in their convenience. Millennials like myself are often criticized for being self-indulgent and discontent to wait in line for what we want: a fast pass to every experience, barely taking the time to heed the adage to always “count your blessings.” We want it all now.

Thankful, Grateful, Blessed - Grateful Heart

In Everything Give Thanks

“See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people. Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (I Thessalonians 5:15-18, NASB)

The popular Bible verse about giving thanks with a grateful heart is about more than just gratitude. The Thessalonians had a unity problem. And at the end of Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians, he lays out a list of how they are to treat each other as they labor together as Jesus’ disciples (Thessalonians 5:11-15). Right in the middle of the list is the instruction “in everything give thanks”.

But what does gratitude have to do with the unity of God’s people? And where do we begin when giving thanks in everything?

Thankful, Grateful, Blessed - Grateful or Thankful?

What’s the difference between grateful and thankful?

God has blessed you in infinite ways, and you want to know how to understand what you feel and how to talk or write about it. But there is more than one word to use. You want to know—because you’re a curious creature—whether you are grateful or thankful. What’s the difference, and does it matter?

Thankful, Grateful, Blessed - 12 Bible Verses About Being Grateful

Gratitude can be hard to express. It’s a feeling that expounds upon being thankful, indebting yourself to God for the gifts you’ve received. Even I fall short in my attempts to express gratitude for kindnesses bestowed by God and others who deserve more than a reciprocal reply.

Thankful, Grateful, Blessed - Attitude of Gratitude

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NIV

It isn’t an unfamiliar scene for Christians to say grace before a meal. Throughout my own life, I’d join a dinner table immersed in laughter, family stories and clinking silverware, but when attention is called to acknowledging God’s grace and favor in the form of the food in front of us, the room grows still and silent in prayer.

All she wanted was restoration. She had been bleeding for twelve years, which meant that to her Jewish community she was unclean, an outsider. She wanted to connect with her husband and have a child. She wanted to be with her faith community. She wanted to not feel broken, discouraged, and ignored anymore. But the healers of her day could not make her well. She had tried everything and was now at the end of her rope.

God will deliver you

How quickly we forget God’s deliverance. That’s not so great if you’re a follower of Jesus. Even worse, I suppose, if you saw first-hand the mighty deliverance of Israel from Egypt. Regardless, we forget. We always have, and we probably always will.
